Common-Sense Chastity

on G. E. Moore, Pius XII & the Power of God

Chastity isn’t something unusual for a pope to talk about. But harnessing a logical maneuver from an analytic philosopher to demolish an objection against the possibility of chastity? You don’t see that from the Chair of Peter every day.

Talking about chastity is both crucially important and notoriously difficult. Shame and discomfort often arise at the mention of sexual sin, yet chastity and the sexual realm still stand at the forefront of conversations about morality. This might be because chastity can feel like one of the most difficult virtues to practice. Or perhaps it’s because the fabric of a flourishing human society, centered as it is around healthy marriages and families, rides on the success of chastity.
