Either/Or

In Scripture there are only two masters, Christ and the devil. There are only two kingdoms, the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. There are only two paths, the path of light and the path of darkness. There are only two gates, the narrow gate that leads to life and the broad gate that leads to destruction. There are only two final dwellings, only two homelands, heaven (leading to the New Earth) and hell. There are only two conditions, saved and lost.

Hard as it may be for postmodern people to understand, there really are no other choices. And your relationship to Christ determines how you are related to each of these decidedly and inescapably binary pairs. Do you begin to realize why certain enemies of Christ today are so insistent on being “non-binary”? It is no accident!

Donald T. Williams is Professor Emeritus of Toccoa Falls College. He stays permanently camped out on the borders between serious scholarship and pastoral ministry, between theology and literature, and between Narnia and Middle-Earth. He is the author of fourteen books, including Answers from Aslan: The Enduring Apologetics of C. S. Lewis (DeWard, 2023). He is a contributing editor of Touchstone.
