North Africa

For the sixteenth year, there was a summer reading game in my children’s library in 2025. I always do a geographical game, encouraging children to “read around the world.” This year’s theme was north Africa. As always, I worry about whether I will have enough books. I knew I had lots of books on ancient Egypt, but what else? As I gathered them, I found that there was a lot of variety among the Egypt books. I also had some books about Ethiopia and Morocco. It was harder to find anything from the other countries of the region. Here’s a selection of what I found. I’ll cover just the non-fiction books in this column, leaving fiction for next time.

Egypt

First, there are books about biblical characters. For Joseph, nice picture books include Joseph the Long Lost Brother, by Catherine Storr, and Joseph the Dreamer, by Clyde Robert Bulla. For better readers, there is Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors, by Lavinia Derwent.

Kathie Johnson has always had a love for children's books. She collected many as a teacher and began sharing them with other teachers. In 1986, she opened a children's library in her home, and it has continued to expand over the years. Many home-schooled and schooled children borrow books from it, and she takes great pleasure in finding the "right" book for a child. She attends First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley.
