Creedal Disciples

It is fascinating how the Apostles’ Creed grew from the Baptismal Formula in the Great Commission (“in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”; Matt. 28:16–20), which goes back to Jesus himself. (All attempts to make Trinitarian doctrine and high Christology the product of a century of doctrinal evolution from the Simple Jesus Meek and Mild founder on a complete lack of documentary evidence.)

This fact ties sound doctrine to the Great Commission and thus to discipleship. One cannot make disciples without making Trinitarians, and one cannot really make Trinitarians without making theologians—a word that needs to reacquire some very different connotations from the ones modern academia has given it.

Donald T. Williams is Professor Emeritus of Toccoa Falls College. He stays permanently camped out on the borders between serious scholarship and pastoral ministry, between theology and literature, and between Narnia and Middle-Earth. He is the author of fourteen books, including Answers from Aslan: The Enduring Apologetics of C. S. Lewis (DeWard, 2023). He is a contributing editor of Touchstone.
