Undoubtedly Difficult
by Donald T. Williams
"Ten thousand difficulties do not make one doubt."—Cardinal Newman
For some minds, one difficulty makes for a doubt. Newman's point is that even 10,000 of them (if there were that many) do not have to, because a difficulty and an error are conceptually two different things, which should not be confused. We should expect there to be difficulties; their mere existence is logically no reason to stumble. I talk to lots of people who need this reminder.
Donald T. Williams is Professor Emeritus of Toccoa Falls College. He stays permanently camped out on the borders between serious scholarship and pastoral ministry, between theology and literature, and between Narnia and Middle-Earth. He is the author of fourteen books, including Answers from Aslan: The Enduring Apologetics of C. S. Lewis (DeWard, 2023). He is a contributing editor of Touchstone.
