Digital Disincarnation
A few years ago, a start-up in San Francisco held what it called a “mind-uploading gala.” Guests paid three hundred dollars a plate to hear a neuroscientist explain how, within their lifetimes, human consciousness would be digitized and stored on servers cooled by Arctic wind farms. Immortality, he promised, was an engineering problem. When someone in the audience asked what would happen to the body after the upload, the speaker shrugged. “Compost it,” he said. The room laughed.
I did not laugh. The joke had a familiar ring to it—not futuristic at all, but ancient. I had seen that shrug before, in a second-century text preserved on brittle parchment.
Irenaeus of Lyons spent most of his episcopal career arguing against people who held precisely this view of the body. The Valentinian Gnostics of his day taught that the material world was the botched handiwork of a lesser god, and that salvation meant shedding the flesh the way a snake sheds dead skin. In Against Heresies, Irenaeus records their language with a mixture of horror and clinical patience: the body, they said, was a “leather tunic” thrown over the luminous soul. Escape the tunic, and you escape suffering.
